Annual Dinner - 7th March 2020
Heart of England’s Annual Dinner
Racing like a Rocket 88, Heart of England’s set off at our home pub; The Lamb. Twenty diners filled the room nicely. Really pleasing to see Graham, Bob D and Carol at our dinner for the first time. Good chat followed by food and then we were into the show.
Barry gave an excellent run-down of what we had been up to in 2019-20. There followed a special presentation to Jon and Conway, who between them have racked up over eighty-five years with the section; you get less for double-murder!
Bob N passed the Piston'Broke award to Mark, a deserving recipient: Headlights, oil leaks and even owning a Lightweight being a few reasons. Jawas weren’t mentioned though they probably should have been….
The celebrations wrapped up at 11:00pm and all went home happy

John’s Low-Tech Music Quiz - 27th February 2020
The back room of The Lamb was FULL and it wasn’t free beer that had attracted Heart of England!
They were there to experience the euphoria that was John B’s ‘Low-Tech Music Quiz’. Competing for a splendid handmade trophy from the hands of Mark, featuring a precision Whitworth spanner, there was much jostling. Lawrence and Dean were confident of holding the trophy aloft having an answer for all but one of the questions. It was not to be as Nigel and Gary snatched it from them with an almost entirely perfect score “I couldn’t have done it without Gary” quoth Nigel.
Hmm, Nigel having had an almost straight run of victories, I’m bagsying him as partner at the next quiz…

Mark’s Motorcycling Quiz - 13th February 2020
There was feverish anticipation of mark’s Motorcycling Quiz. His first ever time taking charge, Mark was straining at the reins!
Twenty-five questions awaited us and we leapt straight in. Despite a large turnout, no pub customers chose to join us for the event. This might have been for the good as they usually beat us… Many and varied were the trials set to us. The one about Spratton and its young ladies was particularly challenging.
Nice to be joined by Mark and Helen for the first time, giving us a Mark U and a Mark C. later in the quiz we also had a Mark 4 which was confusing. Apparently he was a Commando, so not sure what he was playing at amongst we civilians.
With a large variance to the answers Mark sportingly said “Mark them by your conscience” which gave many of us exemplary scores: ‘Matchless, eh?’, well, BSA is near enough…
John and Jon tied for first place so the winner was chosen by a tie-breaker. John went away with a smile and a splendid trophy.
Thanks, Mark, for a grand time!

Conway’s TT Board Game! 23rd January 2020
This year Conway pondered whether he should bring the TT game along, as we’ve played it annually since 1947 (I may have gone dyslexic with the 7 and 4). All demanded that he deliver it up as did tradition itself demands.
So the game began, Bob N leapt off to an early lead on his steamroller however Lawrence slyly added an extra card to the ‘chance pile’ intended to nobble his fast start; ‘Sing the first two lines of Born to be Wild’.
Mark was steady in his Citroën, Lawrence hot on his heels on the 1952 Vincent Black Lightning. Conway, in his glorious yacht, was a little deflated to discover it was actually a sailboard though tacked on steadfast as the fine sailor he is. Poor Bob D, having a bad night of it, was misfiring and slipping all over the track.
Bob N deflected the fatal chance card to Lawrence, wrecking his ride to much amusement but it was Gary on the Red Hunter who slipped past to clinch the golden cup.
Thanks go to Conway for another evening of fun, plotting and excitement. Roll on 2021…

9th January - Bob confuses us!
Bob’s Music Quiz! What an eagerly awaited joy. A goodly crowd awaited our quizmaster and they were satisfied.
Partnered in pairs, off we went with Jimi Hendrix to whet our appetites. Gary was with Lawrence and with his steadfast and vast music knowledge proved a perfect foil to Lawrence. Team Lawrence and Garry were on the same table as Team Mark and Bob D. Fortunately for L&G, Bob D didn’t realise it was written answers until he’d given out most of them. Bob’s partner for the evening; Mark, counteracted with a devastating rendition of the tune for each question but THE WRONG TUNE FROM THAT ARTIST. Most off-putting, probably why Team L&G didn’t win….
Much jollity had as Team Louise and John romped in first with an impressive 66 of a possible 72. This meant for the first time in many a year we beat The Lamb’s pub team. Hurrah and lollipops!
A great evening despite Lawrence disagreeing with the quizmaster that it was Fleetwood Mac, not Led Zeppelin who wrote ‘Whole Lotta Love’ for the Top of the Pops theme. An appeal has been lodged……
